Most women whose pregnancy is progressing without complications will be offered a maximum of two to three scans in their pregnancy. Most scans are performed by a sonographer, who is the healthcare professional trained to use the ultrasound equipment, to take measurements of your baby and to check for major anomalies.

Sonographers are not specialists in obstetrics or fetal medicine, so if something is found you will usually be referred to someone with specialist knowledge.

A dating scan is one that is performed in order to establish the gestational age of after 22 weeks gestation cannot be used to estimate the due date of the baby.

A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures. Dating scans are usually recommended if there is doubt about the validity of the last menstrual period.

By 6 to 7 weeks gestation the fetus is clearly seen on trans-vaginal ultrasound and the heart beat can be seen at this early stage 90 to beats per minute under 6 to 7 weeks, then to beats per minute as the baby matures. Ultrasounds performed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy are generally within 3 – 5 days of accuracy. The most accurate time is between 8 and 11 weeks gestation. This is because the fetus is growing so quickly that there is a big difference in size from week to week.

However, the accuracy of the ultrasound examination is always dependent on the skill of the sonographer and the quality of the equipment. The EDD from the early dating scan is used – if the last menstrual period is not known or is unreliable, or the dating scan differs from the last menstrual period dating by more than 5 days.

Your pregnancy – What to expect

During pregnancy you will be offered screening tests to check that you and your baby are healthy. Screening is your decision — your midwife or specialist doctor will give you information and support to help you to decide whether to have screening or not. Screening tests can tell you whether you or your baby are more likely to have a medical condition. Some medical conditions can make you and your baby very sick and others can affect how your baby grows and learns. If screening shows that you or your baby may have a condition, you will be offered further tests that will let you know for certain.

Seeing your baby for the first time can feel like an exciting event. You may feel anxious too. You can bring your partner, a friend or a family member along with you to share it. During the scan, you lie on an examining table. The scanner sonographer will spread a gel over your tummy and then roll a small scanning device around the area where the gel is. This sends pictures of what’s going on in your womb to a computer screen.

Most scans show that the baby is developing normally because most babies are healthy. Contact your midwife or local maternity unit. The point of the scan is to check the health and growth of your baby and some hospitals may have a policy of not looking at gender. Can your pregnancy scan give the wrong due date? date is at the scan you are offered between 11 weeks and 2 days and 14 weeks plus 1 day,” And yet, bizarrely, after your dating scan at 12 weeks, your due date can get less accurate.

The early pregnancy scan was initially introduced with the primary intention of measuring the fetal crown—rump length to achieve accurate pregnancy dating. During the last decade, however, improvement in the resolution of ultrasound machines has made it possible to describe the normal anatomy of the fetus and diagnose or suspect the presence of a wide range of fetal defects in the first trimester of pregnancy.

In some conditions, the sonographic features are similar to those described in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, but in others there are characteristic sonographic features confined to the first trimester. An embryo of 10 postmenstrual weeks is less than half the length of an adult thumb, but already possesses several thousand named structures, practically any of which may be subject to developmental deviations 2. Thus, the embryonic period proper is of particular importance because the majority of congenital anomalies make their appearance during that time 2.

These statements from embryological investigations have become highly relevant for those involved in first-trimester ultrasound scanning. The term sonoembryology 3 designates the description of the embryonic anatomy, the normal anatomic relations and the development of abnormalities as visualized by ultrasound. To confirm the presence of normal anatomy or to make the diagnosis of an anomaly, we need knowledge of the normal embryonic development, including the appearance of the normal embryo.

This section is based on data from sonoembryological and embryological studies 4— For the ultrasound studies, 7.

(LMP), with the baby due about 40 weeks later. • However, a woman usually releases the egg. (ovulates) and gets pregnant (conceives) about. 14 days after that.

It is common to be given a single ‘estimated due date’ EDD which corresponds the point at which it is estimated that your pregnancy will have lasted 40 weeks. It may be more helpful to be prepared for you baby arrive some time after 37 weeks, and to focus on 42 weeks as the time by which you have a good chance of having given birth. Many women with longer pregnancies find that everyone is asking whether they have had their baby yet, and that health care workers start to suggest inducing labour.

For some women this will be the right decision, but it is important to know that this is your decision to make. Charting temperature, monitoring mucus, using ovulation test kits and knowing times when you could have conceived, or having conceived by IVF may mean you have your own information about when you became pregnant. There is a tendency for midwives and doctors to talk as though the EDD written in your maternity notes is something definite, rather than an estimate which may or may not be accurate.

In that case, if the EDD is later than it should be that could mean that the birth is delayed unnecessarily. This suggests that in general ultrasound dating is more accurate in predicting the birth date than counting from the last monthly period 1,2 but it is still only an estimate and may not always be accurate. A recent study 3 of women who conceived by IVF and therefore knew when their egg was fertilised, found that the routine ultrasound dating scan consistently put their estimated birth date earlier than it should have been by an average of 3 days.

In any case, ultrasound does not give a very accurate prediction of the actual birth date. Dating from ultrasound scans done later than about 20 weeks is increasingly less accurate. If a later scan predicts a date that is too early, this would make it appear that the pregnancy is lasting beyond 42 weeks, when in fact this is not the case. For this reason the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has recommended that that due dates should only be changed in the third trimester in very rare circumstances.
