On Netflix’s “Indian Matchmaking,” marriage consultant Sima Taparia travels the world to meet with hopeful clients and help them find the perfect match for an arranged marriage. The format of the show is simple. Hopeful brides- and grooms-to-be meet with Taparia — often with their overbearing parents in tow — for an initial consultation. Criteria are laid out, potential suitors are presented on paper, dates are arranged, and then it’s up to the couple to decide if it’s a match. In some respects, the producers should be commended. This is a show that turns away from the “big fat Indian wedding” trope and offers something fresh: a look at how some traditional-facing couples meet through the services of a professional matchmaker. The characters’ stories — as well as cringier moments — play out in entertaining ways, at times revealing the absurdities and awkwardness of matchmaking.

I’ve talked a lot about why matchmaking is fun. Today, I want to talk about how to be a good matchmaker. Of course, it’s really quite easy — as long as you keep a few things in mind. Show your hand early when you meet a good candidate. When you come across a super-cool single guy at a party or work event — but you can tell immediately you’ll never have a love affair with him — express your intention to set him up.

Atwood put a post on her Instagram feed inviting people who want to be matched for a blind phone-call date to submit three facts about themselves, including age and location. She would use these facts to set up a phone date with someone she thought was suitable. I stepped away from my computer, and a couple hours later, there were more than ninety responses. Success, Atwood explains, is determined by whether or not a couple is still in touch and still talking following their initial blind phone date.
I matched at least one couple who ended up quarantining together and are now full-on dating—without masks! Atwood likes to draw cartoons on Instagram and write up blurbs that people have sent her, giving them assumed names. The last I heard, they were buying plane tickets so they could meet in person. They just give me some personal information, which of course includes sexual orientation, and I do the choosing. Much of the appeal, Atwood thinks, is due to the bespoke nature of the service.
No algorithms are involved. Furthermore, there are no photos used in this app. The emphasis, says Atwood, is very much on getting people talking. I find that phone calls enable people to be more uninhibited, to talk freely and not worry about what they look like. That can come later.
